I couldn't believe this when I read it. Chloramine damages mucous membranes. Lung damage when exposed to it is similar to that seen in regular smokers.
After reading the previous statements chloramine removal should be top of your list for good health choices. To remove chloramines just makes good health sense.
You may or may not know in some cities chloramine is used as a disinfectant in their water systems instead of chlorine. This can be dangerous to your health.
A way to know if your water is treated with chloramine is it will have a greenish tint instead of a bluish tint. It won't be as noticeable in just a glass full, but if you fill a five-gallon bucket with water you should be able to see if it has a green or blue tint. You then know you need to remove chloramines from your water.
Chloramine removal after the water gets to your house is just as important as removing its counterpart chlorine. Don't leave either dangerous toxin in your water.
First off, chloramine doesn't remove all the dangerous pathogens as well as chlorine does. People with weakened immune systems, such as infants, elderly, people taking chemo, and organ transplant patients, still need to boil the water for more than 10 minutes before it can be deemed safe for them.
Other serious reactions to chloramine are skin problems - burning and itching of the skin, skin rashes, and sores. Some have developed huge welts, which completely go away as soon as they quit using the water.
You can develop respiratory problems - asthma, coughing, wheezing, sinus congestion, shortness of breath, and choking. The least of these are just irritating and bothersome, but the worst can be fatal.
Chloramine removal can be accomplished by installing a home water filter with a carbon filtration method. Don't expect the small refrigerator pitchers to remove chloramines. Those filters are too small thus the water does not come into contact long enough with the filter to do an efficient job of removing the toxins.
Even with a kitchen faucet filter don't rely on the ones that attach to the faucet. Those are usually not long enough either to do a good job. The best kind is the one that sits on the counter top or under the counter. These styles have bigger filters inside that do a more thorough job at filtering out all contaminates along with removing chloramines.
Buying one that has two filters, such as the carbon filter and a sub micron and a multi block filter will protect you against other contaminates besides just the chloramines. The one I use cost less than a hundred dollars and cost me just 9 cents a gallon to filter my water.
It's such a small price to pay for chloramine removal and other dangerous contaminates. Don't go another day without a home water filter. Your health is certainly worth the small price you'll pay, plus you will end up with delicious tasting water.
